[Text available only in English] mirage (French mirage, from Latin mirari - "to admire", "to wonder", "to look with delight") - an optical phenomenon resulting from the refraction of light (refraction) in the atmosphere, caused by temperature differences in the air layers. It occurs most often in deserts, asphalt roads, water surfaces or in polar regions.
Mirage is sometimes interpreted as a metaphor for illusion, false hope or striving for unattainable goals, and in extreme conditions it can be perceived as the boundary between reality and perception.
