REFRACTIVE INDEX
[Text available only in English] REFRACTIVE INDEX is an audiovisual performance by MONOCOLOR. The entirely algorithmic and generative images and sounds of the work create an audiovisual experience that is always in a state of flux. Pointclouds form structures and shapes that alternate between intricate, architectural formations and natural, organic patterns. The concept of refraction, which describes the change in the deflection of light as it passes from one medium to another, is artistically tested and applied to the translation from image to sound and sound to image. The contradiction in the title, in which refraction is an analog, natural phenomenon and the index is an attempt to quantify and represent this phenomenon, points to the field of tension in which the work moves, both conceptually and aesthetically.

What is needed

MONOCOLOR — Refractive Index
Audiovisual Live Performance — Technical Rider

- Performance Duration: 35 – 45 Minutes
- Setup and Soundcheck / Linecheck Time: 90 Minutes
An experienced video- and audio technician should overlook and assist setup, linecheck and performance. The setup and linecheck slot should not be shared with other artists to ensure a focused and quick setup. All technicians needed for the setup need to be at the venue at the time of the linecheck.

Table / Stage
- The performer stands at a sturdy table (sometimes called a DJ-Table / Stage Deck) on stage.
- The performer stands next to the projection surface, oriented 90 degrees towards it. See image on page 2.
- The table should have a size of 200 x 100cm, height 90-100cm. A shorter table is not acceptable.
- The table should have a matte black surface to avoid reflections. Matte black tape should be used whenever possible.
- The front and sides of the table should be covered with black fabric (stage molton) or a black table skirt.
- Thestageshouldbefreeofanyotherstageelementsliketables,standsorinstrumentstoallowtheaudienceaclear
view of the projection without any obstructions.

Video
- Output: 1920x1080p / 60FPS.
- Other aspect aspect ratios / resolutions might also be acceptable. Please communicate this ahead of time.
- HDMI or Displayport is preferred over NDI for lower latency. The cable needs to be on stage. The cable should be
plugged directly into the projector without any other devices (like switchers / splitters) in between to reduce latency.
- A high brightness, native 1920x1080p Full HD projector with HDMI input is required. Laser projectors are preferred.
- The video projection should be correctly aligned with the projection surface.
- The projection surface needs to be a 16:9 clean white or grey surface.
- Rear projection is preferred over front projection to avoid shadows.

Audio
- Output: Stereo over 2x 6.3mm balanced TRS audio cable (2x 6.3mm stereo jack) / XLR is also possible.
- An appropriately sized sound system with subwoofers needs to be set up at the venue.
- In case of multichannel sound, an appropriate USB or Dante Audio Interface needs to be at the venue.

Monitoring
- The performer requires stereo monitoring with separate volume control on stage.

Light
- No stage light wanted or needed. The audience room has to be as dark as possible.

Power
- The performer requires a power bar with 6 European power sockets (Type F - Schuko) on stage.

Documentation
The performer will bring video equipment to document the performance. Please assist him in placing the cameras. Documentation material generated by photographers / videographers during the performance is highly appreciated.
Contact
Please put the performer in contact with the technician responsible for the setup to discuss any questions ahead of time. Please forward this rider to all technicians who will work on the setup.
