Last Lpm i had technical difficulties, whit the set up so last minutes i had to cancel it, so this time is a second chance to make it on LPM too.

we would like to run the installation for at least 3-4 hours!

Faceecho:

The concept of the installation is based on the fact that 90% of human communication is non-verbal, and these non-verbal behaviours do not always fit in with our thoughts. Sometimes we think something of an other human being but we communicate a completely different thing with our expressions, our gestures. On one hand, we try to focus on those non-verbal signs that we communicate unconsciously and on the other hand amplify them. We will project giant faces in the installation space belonging to different races and subcultures. Time to time the faces morph into each other.

The system detects your non-verbal gestures, and from that sometimes understands your subconcious thoughts about another human being, so its also a "mirror" for the visitor. You can face your own preconception and prejudice about other people, but during the installation it wonÂ’t be so directly explicit, and you will get a print of your statistics when you leave the installation space about what was your reaction to each face. It could be specially interesting for people who describe themselves open minded and liberal. It is a good opportunity to face ourselves.

The only empirical and universal language to communicate on earth is non-verbal signs. When the modeled face sometimes provokes us we have to understand his gesture and react to it. The non-verbal dialog system between the visitor and the projected face will be based on the Paul Ekman founded Facial Action Coding System (FACS). We wrote the reaction options for the program following his studies (and many other researches) about social behaviour, about how we react on each gesture in a natural environment.

According to our plan, the visitor will have a reaction when he suddenly sees a projected face. After he reacted and had a non-verbal sign as a gesture, the projected model will answer on that. This way a non-verbal communication starts between the visitor and the projected face. The non-verbal answers (from the projected face) and communication method is based on Paul Ekman and on many other social and cognitive studies. (We had a half year research with a communication and cognitive scientist group). When the system feels that there is no relevant gesture coming from the visitors it repeats one of the previous visitorÂ’s gesture (and also represents it in an amplified way) from the non-verbal conversations between them.

When the system feels that there is no relevant gesture coming from the visitors it repeats one of the previous visitorÂ’s gesture (and also represents it in an amplified way) from the non-verbal conversations between them. Another important part of the projection is that the faces in random sequences morph into another. Each face has a different racial sign.

When the system feels that less and less non-verbal signs are coming from the visitors at some point the projection will fade down. The projection also finishes if the visitors are trying to go closer to the projection. ( That it is also for safety reason.) Together with the fading down a small light will turn on to show us the way to the exit. Before they leave the object, the visitor will find a printer, and it prints his results to him, such as a collective of the projected faces as icons, and he can see the diagrams of his reactions to each face. At the end he can leave the installation via the hidden exit door.

The computer generates the projected face live and handles his gestures as he responds for the human expressions. So it is a non-verbal dialog between the generated video and the human. It is a continuous process between the installation and the visitors. Each part of our installation is interactive, from the light to the projection with the exit printer. The sound will also react on the process.

The attached video is a technical documentation of the project.
