Closer

[Text available only in English] Closer is a 30 minute performance piece which explores the concept of ritual. What is the sound of ritual? What are the rituals of sound and its creation? Using these concepts, the artist creates a template for performance, engaging the audience in the idea that ritual can be a way to serve a higher gain, but can also become a suffocation.

Combining performance, dance, and visuals, with clear references and inference to Indian concepts of ritualism, this is a unique performance by solo artist Sarah Sayeed.

The piece begins with the drone or tanpura, a classical Indian sound that creates the basis for all melodies, chords and vocals. The artist uses the stage and its surrounding area as a space for meditation and dialogue with the audience, allowing the audience to find their own journey and exploration of ritual and what it means.

Musically, the piece will combine traditional forms of music such as tabla and Indian classical vocals through to the playing of violin to create Arabic and Indian scales, and the development of electronic and rhythmic sounds such as drum n bass.
