Guli
[Text available only in English] As a traditional toy in Malaysia, ‘Guli’, which is another word for ‘marble’, left a significant trace in the artist’s childhood memory. Growing up in a small town in Hulu Selangor, the artist recalls playing marbles as a daily activity. As a game that requires multiple players, it was an experience that he shared amongst his childhood friends. The artist therefore sees Guli as a tool of unity; one that brings different individuals together and creates social interaction between them. Thus, the form of sphere that appears repeatedly in this work is inspired by Guli, as part of the artist’s attempt to create a digital disruption that he hopes would serve as a uniting tool amongst the audience. The phenomenon of digital disruption has always intrigued the artist, and has been explored through his past projects through the creation of public installations and e-sport events. However, for the first time, the artist evokes a story that is personal to him; a story that he believes is shared amongst other Malaysians too. This piece is accompanied with a sound created by Iwaz & Gan from Seni Tibatiba.
